Access the Network: Switching
The network switch is the main point of access to any network, regardless of the access type (ethernet, fibre, or wireless) they all connect to a switch. Network switches are intelligent devices enabling fast data transfer whilst minimising network "storms". Intelligent switches combine a variety of features, from VLAN's (segregate the network into departments for example) to some routing functionality. The distuingishing line between a router and a switch is now becoming blurred, as such the switch needs more features for it to stand out in the network environment.
LAN Connectivity
Features such as Port Security, enabling administrators to restrict network access on a per-port basis. Quality of Service enabling guaranteed bandwidth or response for mission critical applications. As with WAN connectivity for inter-office connectivity, the LAN is also highly critical as it is the main backbone. All the network traffic is passed across a switch at some point in its travels, so choosing the right switch is crucial to network sucess.
Managing the Network
Management is fundamental to ensuring that the network performs efficiently at all times, even under heavy load. Centralising this management ensures that the administrative overhead is minimal.
